Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)

Synonym: Two varieties are recognized in Colorado: var. coloradoensis and var. brandegei, though the distinguishing characteristics for each variety are not yet clear.

Look Alikes: M. tanacetifolia has once or twice pinnately lobed leaves and taller, leafier stems. M. coloradoensis is distinguished from other species by its deep purple flowers, short stems, and toothed leaves.

Flowering/Fruiting Period: July-early August/August.

Habitat: Gravelly areas in mountain parks, slopes and rock outcrops up to dry tundra. Elev. 8500-12,500 ft.

Distribution: Endemic to SC Wyoming and Colorado (Gunnison, Hinsdale, La Plata, Lake, Mineral, Park, Pitkin, Saguache and San Juan Cos.).
