Good morning and welcome to the Internet Data Delivery Workshop.  I am Melissa Landon from the CNHP and I would like to thank all of you for participating in this workshop to provide valuable input towards NatureServe's efforts in establishing a distributed internet data delivery system.  This workshop is being funded by National Science Foundation and represents the continuation or next phase of workshop held in 2000 at Colorado State University during Mary Klein's tenure as Director for CNHP.  That workshop was also funded by NSF and was titled "Internet-based Biodiversity Database Workshop:  an assessment of needs and tools."  The goal of that workshop was to define the need and set the framework for a seamless distributed data system for the Intl. Network of Conservation Data Centers.  The information gained during that workshop was utilized in the preparation of another NSF proposal for the construction of a prototype database.  That next phase has now been funded by NSF and this workshop represents just the beginning of that effort.  As you can see from the agenda, the morning sessions will be spent providing background information to put things in context.  In the afternoon we will break up into focus groups for more detailed discussions on three topics for which NatureServe would like to solicit your input and feedback.

Your handouts contain a description of the workshop, today's agenda, high-level assumptions regarding this project, a list of the high priority issues and constraints identified by the first NSF workshop, and detailed description of the three focus groups for this afternoon's discussions.

On a personal note, I would like to thank NatureServe for the opportunity to work on this project.  They have been a great group of people to work with and I have appreciated the chance be a part of the Institutional Relationships Team.

Alright, let's get started…I would like to introduce our first speaker, Bruce Stein, Vice President for Programs with NatureServe; Bruce will be discussing rising to the challenge of improving access to NatureServe data.
